Hey! I’m Emily. I’m an everyday lifestyle photographer for down to earth families. I love getting to see the many ways that families build relationships and connect with each other. Each family is so unique in how they interact with each other. I get excited when I have the opportunity to document the story of how families are made.
Pretend for a moment that I met you in an elevator and you asked me what I do, I might tell you something like, “I am an observant supporter and encourager who understands that life rarely follows our perfect plan. I help families see beyond the craziness of their daily chaos and embrace the once in a lifetime experience of each day.” Which might leave you looking at me a little quizzically, but I’m okay with that. It’s what I do beyond the clicking of the shutter.
If on the off chance the power went out and we were stuck on this elevator for any length of time you would find out so many things about me that you probably didn’t know you wanted to know. What can I say, I like to talk. You would learn that I am a wife to a very hard working man who loves to do nothing more than go fishing with our kids. A mom to a brave, determined son who is a lot like his dad and a spirited, creative daughter who definitely takes after me. I’m a teacher with a B.A. in Visual Arts and I teach in a very small private school. You would also find out that I love chocolate and peanut butter, but never together, I can talk forever about food, and sometimes I buy shoes because I like the way the insides look.
If you listened to more than just the words I spoke, you would gain an understanding of how much I value relationships and the experiences that strengthen them. You would learn that the best way for others to show me they care is to just hang out with me. I would probably let you in on the two greatest life lessons my grandmas taught me. One taught me that every day is a once in a life time experience and it is best to enjoy it. The other taught me that in every situation there is at least one thing to be thankful for. Find it and hold to it tightly. I try to live my life by these two principles and instill them in my children.
Even though I like to talk, I think the best part of a conversation is listening. You find out a lot of things when you listen to what is being said and pay attention to the way it is being communicated. I hope during the course of our conversation that I would find out so many things about you that I didn’t know I wanted to know. Like maybe the fact you love yoga pants and all things food. Maybe you understand that life is less about being perfect and more about the journey each day brings. You feel the small moments, like conversations around the dinner table, are what really knit your family together. More importantly I would learn what it is you really love and why it matters to you.
When the doors of that elevator finally opened you might be feeling a little dazed. I mean we’ve been stuck for who knows how long and the conversation covered so many topics, but really you should be thankful I didn’t accidentally hit you. I talk with my hands, a bit wildly at times.
I couldn't do anything less than smile at your beautiful story about who you are. I think we could be great friends. Thanks for writing in your own voice :)
